日本に米国からジャズが伝わったのは1910年頃といわれています。つまり太平洋の彼方から飛んできた魅力的な音楽の種が芽吹いてのち100年間絶え間なく咲き続けているというわけです。 その歴史の中で十年ほど前までは女性サックス奏者といえば数人の名前を指折り数えるにすぎませんでした。 その数少ないなかのひとりが増田ひろみでした。
長い演奏経験と研鑽に裏打ちされたその実力は演奏家仲間やライブハウスなどで生演奏に接してきたファンには良く知られています。はじめて彼女の演奏に接したオーディエンスは、華奢でエレガントな容姿とは裏腹な思いがけないパワーの直撃を受けて戸惑うかもしれません。 しかしたちまち心地よい彼女の音楽の虜になってしまうことでしょう。 彼女の演奏に一貫していることは原曲を大切にしその上に創造性あふれるアドリブと絶え間ないスイング感を展開することだろうと思います。特にバラッドにおける表現の豊かさは素晴らしくライブなどではひときわ大きな拍手が湧くのをよく耳にします。
オルガンを入れた編成のジャズといえば主に黒人オルガン奏者によるソウルフルな演奏を思い浮かべる方が多いだろうと思います。しかし、このCDで聴かれる演奏はやや趣がちがっています。それはクールで都会的な アルトサックスの響きがギターとオルガンの門柱の間を自在に飛び回り共鳴するところにあるのではないかと思われます。 増田ひろみは一時期、平井庸一とともにレニー・トリスターノの楽曲を演奏していたことがありました。ロジカルな雰囲気をもつそのスタイルの片鱗はこのアルバムにも少なからず認められます。 アルバムのタイトルになっている「SMOG EYES」はトリスターノの高弟たちとと親交の深かったテッド・ブラウンの作曲、「THINGIN'」はまさしくトリスターノの高弟であったリー・コニッツの作曲であることからもそのことが伺うことができます。 こうした作品がオルガンを伴って演奏されるのはおそらく本邦初めてではないでしょうか。いや、世界で初めてかもしれません。 このライブアルバムには誰もが知る有名曲にこの2曲を交えた2ステージの全演奏が収録されております。 高音質の録音によりライヴ当夜の雰囲気をぜひ心ゆくまで楽しんでいただきたいと思います。

It is said that the introduction of jazz from the United States to Japan occurred around the 1910s. This means that the enchanting seeds of music that rode the wind across the Pacific Ocean have continued to bloom without fail for over a century.
Up until the last ten years of this fruitful history, female saxophone musicians have been few and far between.
One of these few artists was Hiromi Masuda.
Masuda’s musical abilities, backed by a long experience of playing and in-depth studying, is well known by both her fellow musicians and fans who have experienced her live performances in the flesh.
Audiences who encounter her music for the first time may initially find themselves confounded, upon being struck by such powerful music contrary to her delicate and elegant appearance.
But it is without doubt that such listeners will eventually become entranced by her serene music as well.
A constant throughout all her performances is the respect she pays to the original song, while adding on her own adlib that brims with creativity, coupled with an unwavering sense of swing.
In particular, the vivid expressions she displays for ballad performances never fail to bring about a large round of applause.
When asked to visualize a jazz ensemble including organs, many may picture a Black jazz organist playing soulful music. However, the performances heard on this CD are somewhat different.
This uniqueness is brought about by the cool, urban sounds of the alto sax flitting around and resonat- ing between the two bold and powerful musical pillars built from the sounds of the organ and guitar. At one point in her life, Hiromi Masuda played in Lenny Tristano’s music along with Yoichi Hirai.
A fragment of his style of music, recognizable by its logical atmosphere, can be detected in this album as well.
Tristano’s influence can also be noted by the fact that the song this album is named after, “SMOG EYES,” was written by Ted Brown --a man extremely close to Tristano’s disciple --and that “THINGIN’” was written by none other than Lee Konitz, Tristano’s disciple.
Such a piece, where these songs are covered with an organ in the ensemble mix, is most likely the first of its kind in Japan.
In fact, it may be the first in the whole world.
This live album contains recordings of two stage performances, consisting of these two songs and a collection of notable songs known across the world.
